Since 2004, Birch Tree Capital has assisted investors and others in financing renewable electric power generation projects. We “wrote the book” in 2007 on wind financing structures for the DOE (see our Resources page). We focus on enabling limited-recourse equity and debt financing for well-structured projects.

Our clients circle the negotiating table. They include strategic equity investors, institutional tax-oriented investors, developers, clean energy funds, municipalities, and state energy agencies, cooperatives, investment banks and commercial lenders,. We specialize in relationship investing, where the interests of the developer, investors, and lenders are aligned. Successfully completed deals lead to additional investment opportunities and shared savings in future transaction costs and effort. In today’s market, with constrained margins on all sides, success is measured not just in terms of the immediate deal, but in the willingness of the parties to return to finance additional projects.

		Example Project For the U.S. subsidiary of a global life insurance company, Birch Tree Capital is identifying, structuring, and closing tax-efficient equity investments in wind and other renewable power projects in the United States. To date, the company has invested in four wind power projects aggregating almost 290MW in four states. The projects required resolving competing interests among the investor, the project developer, and syndicated commercial lenders.


		Example Project For an investment banking firm arranging private debt offerings, Birch Tree Capital has identified and assessed a potential financing opportunity providing bridge debt financing for a merchant wind project.


		Example Project For several municipalities and other public sector entities, Birch Tree Capital has prepared applications to the U.S. Treasury seeking authority to issue clean renewable energy bonds ("CREBs") to finance their projects.


		Example Project For a cooperative, a state clean energy fund, and a state energy agency, Birch Tree Capital developed several variations for a regional clean energy private equity fund, built a sophisticated financial model to portray and assess the fund's financial prospects, and evaluated how state financial support might enhance its effectiveness.
